Modern Whig Party of Virginia

The Virginia Chapter of the Modern Whig Party is at the center of this grassroots movement due to its proximity to the national headquarters in Washington, DC. The Virginia Chapter has directly participated in national mass meetings and continues to organize.

Established in 1833, the Whigs are one of America's oldest mainstream political parties. We were the original party of Abraham Lincoln and four other U.S. Presidents.

Revived by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, the grassroots movement has quickly attracted tens of thousands of members. We represent moderate voters from all walks of life who cherry-pick between traditional Democratic and Republican ideals in what has been called the Modern Whig Philosophy.

This includes general principles of fiscal responsibility, strong national defense and bold social progression.

Virginia Whigs endorse call for moderate Republicans to join Whigs

FAIRFAX, VA -- Founded by veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, the Modern Whig Party has quickly attracted tens of thousands of members to go along with 26 state chapters. The majority of these members are moderates disenchanted with the increasingly right-wing ideology of their former Republican Party. As such, the Washington, DC-based Modern Whig Party continues to gain traction as a viable home for moderate voters.

Recently, Sen. Arlen Specter said he left the GOP for the Democrats based on the same reasons thousands have flocked to the Modern Whigs. In a twist of historic irony, the Modern Whig Party is now urging moderate Republicans to abandon the GOP and help build this grassroots movement.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is historically independent-minded. Residents are increasingly disenchanted with the increasing focus on ideology rather than common sense. As such, the Virginia Chapter of the Modern Whig Party echoes the calls for those to join the Whig movement who subscribe to fiscal responsibility and moderate social values.

The Raleigh News & Observer was the most recent mainstream media outlet to acknowledge the need for the Modern Whig Party. In addition, the Modern Whig movement made headlines earlier this year when it announced the official revival of Abraham Lincoln's original political party. Through the hard work and motivation of recently deployed service members, the Modern Whig Party was organized to be a home for those voters -- military and non-military alike -- who place common-sense, rational thought ahead of ideology. Issues such as energy independence, fiscal responsibility, strong national defense and bold social progression are among some of the plans offered by the organization.

About the Modern Whig Party

Established in 1833, the Whig Party has a long history of carrying the mantle of America's middle-of-the-road political ideologies. Revived by Iraq and Afghanistan veterans as the Modern Whig Party, this grassroots organization stands for common sense legislation; advocating for such issues as fiscal responsibility, strong national defense, energy independence, and bold social progression. We see the value of independent thinking and the danger of being limited to one distinct ideology. For more information visit: www.modernwhig.com

During the organization phase of this movement, the Modern Whig Party already is recognized as the fastest-growing mainstream political movement in the country. Thousands of moderate Republicans and Democrats have signed on. With an executive committee and national headquarters in Washington, DC, the Modern Whig Party is recapturing the longtime ideals of Lincoln as they build toward being a true party for the rest of us.
